So here’s my addition to the Feel Good Friday legacy…

It started off as a drunken conversation at Corsica’s Calvi Rocks festival in July 2009. Friendly Fires had just played live, Holy Ghost had just finished DJing, and in the post-gig haze the decision was made by each band to cover one of the other’s songs.

Eight months later and here are the quite brilliant results. Friendly Fires were the first to honour the agreement, finishing 2009 in the studio with a superb take on the DFA duo’s ‘Hold On’ classic.

Meanwhile, Holy Ghost’s cover of ‘On Board’ took a little longer – sessions vanished, vocal tracks mysteriously vanished, hard drives were fractured and somewhere in the middle of it, the duo lost their close friend Jerry Fuchs, whose awe-inspiring drumming is at the core of this version of ‘On Board’. The results are equally special.

The uniquely powerful vocals of Emily Haines have been pushing Metric to the top of the charts since 1999 and there has been no turning back since.

As soon as I heard the MSTRKRFT remix of Monster hospital I immediately fell in love with Metric. Yeah I know that Metric isn’t really one of those bands that most dudes say they love but sometimes you just can’t deny it.

The band officially became “Metric” back in 1999 while Emily Haines and James Shaw (Guitarist) where sharing an apartment in NY with future members of: THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS, TV ON THE RADIO and the LIARS. Originally, James Shaw used the term Metric to describe the musical precision of Emily’s vocals and a the beat off of his synthesizer. The Haines, Shaw duo went over to the UK in 2000 to work on a few projects together for a couple years and eventually they made their way stateside to continue working on getting Metric out to the masses. Shortly there after,  Metric would gain two more band members Josh Winstead (Basist) and Joules Scott-Keyand they would be formed into Metric we know today.

Recently Metric has been touring the world to promote their new FANTASIES album and each show has been bigger than the next.

It doesn’t have any fancy mixing, scratching, or beat juggling but it does have the perfect blend of funk, house, electro, soul, good music. I hate classifying everythign into genres so Ill just say that The BONER JAMS mixtape is the perfect mixtape to play next time you have that special “hipster” lady over. Skream (aka Oliver Jones) has been making music since he was 15. It all started when his brother Hijak exposed him to the scene. Eventually Skream would land himself a job at Big Apple Records in Croydon UK (More on Croydon here) which put him at the epicenter of Dubstep in the UK. Skream eventually caught his big break when Hatcha started playing his tracks. After that, the rest is history…
In 2005 Skream released the insanely popular track Midnight request line, and that immediately catapulted him into the Dubstep spotlight worldwide.
