Halloween weekend was last weekend and as all of you know I absolutely HATE Halloween on so many levels its not even funny. BUT Im going to keep things a little festive today and make MIAMI HORROR the topic of this Music MondayIm sure MIAMI HORROR is old news to the good majority of you who actually read the Music Monday posts but I really dont care. I have been listening to M.H. on repeat for a week straight and I can’t seem to get enough.

Since there are two different views on who is in Miami Horror and what they are all about, Miami Horror can refer to its producer, Benjamin Plant, or its four-piece live incarnation.

Plant began his music career by being a “Dj for hire” while making remixes on the side, and then eventually his remixes started to gain some serious attnetion and it turned him into the MIAMI HORROR we know today. He remixed Pnau, The Presets, Bloc Party, Datarock and The Dirty Secrets.
Miami Horror’s live show is augmented by Josh Moriarty (Peacocks, ex-Young & Restless) on guitar, DJ/producer Aaron Shanahan on drums, and Daniel Whitechurch on keys, guitar and bass guitar. The live incarnation of Miami Horror appeared at the Good Vibrations, ‘Groovin The Moo’ and Splendour In The Grass festivals in 2009. The band also supported indie pop act Friendly Fires on their Australian tour in July 2009.
Ok now onto the music.
A SUPER RARE mixtape Benjamin Plant did for JJJ RADIO can be found here:

You know how there are some groups that you just know are gonna blow up at any moment? MONEYPENNY is one of those groups!

After their wildly successful performance at Lollapalooza 2009, Chicago-based DJ/electro duo Moneypenny will take their music to the masses with the release of a free 2-song digital single and string of upcoming high profile buzz gigs in Chicago, LA and San Francisco.

The duo, which began strictly as a DJ project in 2008, quickly blossomed into a full-fledged live act as Jessica Gonyea (A-Cup) and Chess Hubbard (Mother Hubbard)’s shared passion for new wave, pop, indie, electro and house music led them to write and record original material. Kept under lock and key until their debut live performance at Lollapalooza, Moneypenny’s original tracks quickly became must have material for industry types on both sides of the pond as word spread about these two incredibly talented young ladies. More than just two pretty faces, Moneypenny come stacked with a slew of great songs – one of which has already been licensed to ABC TV’s “Make It Or Break It” – a charismatic live show incorporating custom video projections and DJ skills to keep the after party going all night long.

Moneypenny’s trend of playing “all the right gigs” continues into October with live sets at Dim Mak Tuesdays @ Cinespace in Los Angeles and the legendary Popscene! party in San Francisco acting as their debut performances in each market.

Moneypenny are working on their debut full length release for 2010 (working with Simon Perry/Echo and The Bunnymen), however in the meantime, they’d like to share a free gift for you to post and check out.

First single “Say No” was recorded in Chicago earlier this year and comes packaged with an insanely dance floor ready remix courtesy of good friends and fellow Chicagoans, Hey Champ.

Download both tracks below and feel free to offer these as free downloads:

Im telling you right now… be on the look out for these two.. they WILL be taking over very soon!

Heavy Accents, what can I say other than Andrew is one of the most Underrated Dj’s I have seen / heard in a long time.

Andrew has been releasing mixtapes and doing performances accross L.A. and O.C. under the Heavy Accents moneker for over a year now and he keeps getting better and better.
I had the HUGE pleasure of seeing him absolutely wreck the crowd at TABU in Vegas during a party he did with Crossover for MAGIC. Not saying that all the DJ’s in vegas aren’t worth anything, but his transitions and track selections were way above the rest.

Right before we all left for vegas, he sent me over his latest mix called DISCO DESIRE

Considering we pretty much love ALL things “Disco” this mixtape was on repeat during my entire ride up and down from Vegas.

How do you kill an artist who’s already “Dead”? Simple. Use a Vocoder!

Deadmau5 is one of those very rare and lucky artists that can put out stuff that will be loved by the Douchebags, Guidos and Hipsters all at the same time.

Deadmau5 was undenyably, the golden boy of the electro scene, Ill even admit to being a fan but after I saw his new official video with Rob Wire I can honestly say Deadmau5 is Dead!

deadmau5 ft Rob Swire – Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff Official Video

Usually I save the “Talking shit” posts to just the photos of shame but this is ridiculous!

I can expect to hear the played out vocoder bullshit from Zuper Blaque, T. Pain and any other talentless artist who calls themself a “musician” but this is DEAMAU5!! The very same person who I lost my shit over at the last Fabulous Fest, the very same person who we have on OUR promo video, and the very same person who provided the musical inspiration to the first time I got flashed from a chick on E. And now all that is gone with a single edit. I understand that being an artist is all about getting your stuff out to as many people as possible, Douche bags included. But if you are planning on selling out with a voicebox track, why not go all the way and use Kanye or someone who was worth the sell out.

Ok rant over with… Im not going to post that shit-box remix of the one of my favorite songs so dont ask!

But their newest mixtape is actually very good!

It doesn’t have any fancy mixing, scratching, or beat juggling but it does have the perfect blend of funk, house, electro, soul, good music. I hate classifying everythign into genres so Ill just say that The BONER JAMS mixtape is the perfect mixtape to play next time you have that special “hipster” lady over. You wont find any buzz saw electro, speaker blowing dubstep, or insane screamo on this mixtape but that’s not what ladies like now is it?

When it comes to remixing classic electro tracks, everyone has their own opinions on what will sound good, often times they are wrong and they completely butcher the track all together. This time, the ROBBED BY ROBOTS dudes did DRAGONETTE some justice and remixed her I GET AROUND track into something that I could listen to over and over again. In fact, I’ve already listened to it 3 times while I was writing this post, and I will probably put it on my workout playlist. It’s done very well.!

In the Music / DJing biz, hard work pays off and I must say after 3 months of song submissions ERNOLD SANE has officially wow’d us with his latest two remixes.

Recently our inboxes have been getting flooded with remix after remix and although I really try hard to listen to every single song, the majority of them end up disappointing. Last week I was forwarded ERNOLD’S latest remix of MAJOR LAZER’S PON DE FLOOR and I actually couldn’t wait to put it up on the site. Even though 2000000000 other music blogs already have the song up… I decided it was just tooo good to pass up.

MAJOR LAZER – PON DE FLOOR (ERNOLD SANE REMIX)

Once I added that song to my music library I noticed I had another song by ERNOLD that would have been perfect for our DUBSTEP WEEK last week. I have no idea where it came from but Im glad I found it. Since Dubstep is now one of those genres that almost every DJ is getting behind I wanted to make sure I gave his remix of DJ CLASS’ IM THE SHIT some justice.

DJ CLASS – I’M THE SHIT (ERNOLD SANE WOBBLE MIX)

Keep pumping out the good tracks Ernold.. they just keep getting better and better.

Nate Jackson from OC Weekly just finished his write up in on our very own Colossal KNXN!! I must say, this article has made me so proud!

Huntington Beach DJ duo Colossal KNXN bring larger-than-life beats to local dance floors
The nocturnal lifestyle of a club DJ rarely involves the glare of afternoon sunlight. Which explains the sunglasses on DJs Tony Long (“Tea Long”) and Brandon Rillera (“BB Guns”) during a midday interview on the patio of the Gypsy Den in Costa Mesa.

The eyewear on these two Huntington Beach-based song selectors also provides a neat visual metaphor: Reflections bounce and bend between Long’s metallic aviator lenses and Rillera’s pitch-black sun blockers, creating a warped parallel dimension, populated with funhouse versions of their fellow diners and passers-by.

It’s this mind-altering moment of self-reflection that shines through at a Colossal KNXN set. Running wild with endless tracks of melody and mayhem, Colossal KNXN’s sound weaves a net of industrialized beats and human soul designed to capture and drag their prey into a primal state of rhythm….

…“You’ve got a lot of these kids now who can’t mix. If you gave them two real records, they wouldn’t be able to do it,” says Long, shaking his head.

Rillera adds that “lack of a unique style” is a common epidemic among digital-only DJs. Colossal KNXN’s knowledge and eclecticism often result in random yet satisfying combos such as the ’80s pop of Men Without Hats poured over a German synth beat (see Long’s edit of Siriusmo’s “Girls Rock,” currently streaming on their MySpace)….

…Colossal KNXN can still be found on Wednesdays huddled in Avalon’s wood-paneled DJ booth, beer in hand (though it now costs $1) as beats and body heat rise to the ceiling.

Colossal KNXN have also expanded their well-oiled dance parties to monthly residencies at such hipster haunts as Detroit Bar, the Crosby and Proof, along with glossier gigs at Sutra, iLounge and LA’s Cinespace. Not to mention major LA rave billings at Hard and the Heist for packed rooms of 1,500 people or more….

…Much of Colossal KNXN’s hype is funneled through their relationship with the online artist community fakeRICH, which hosts a barrage of local electro events in OC and LA as well as a blog documenting their exploits. Similar to LA party blog the Cobrasnake, fakeRICH gets attention for high-end party pics and partnerships with sought-after underground artists.

As summer rolls in, Long and Rillera are diving into the studio to produce two remixes and two original tracks bearing their insignia, though an official release date has not been set.

“Going from making tracks to producing [them] is a big deal for us,” says Long, adding that it will only get them greater Internet buzz and more recognition from bigger artists.

Before we even heard the newest from Clifford Lidell.. We kept hearing through the local DJ channel (GMO) about how good it was and that we needed to put it on the site ASAP. Well, we have had a chance to hear it and its very very good! To say that Clifford blends different genres in this mixtape is an understatement he takes the best of almost every genre and merges them all into one. I can honestly say that this is the best mixtape I have heard in 2009.

As quoted from Clifford himself:

The mixtape, as promised, presents a wider variety of music than my older releases, digging deeper than ever into some of the more entertaining, unexpected, and often times embarrassing layers of contemporary music history. It’s intentionally meant to drift through seas of nostalgia and pop culture, all while keeping in unlikely harmony and mood.

In case you weren’t there and you’re looking for some sort of witty / intellectual description of the event. My answer to you would be this:
HARD 13 was a Rave …simple as that, loud music, girls in costumes, drugs, expensive drinks, sweat, neon, beads, and stuffed animals.

Ill save my witty comments and opinions for a later post on the event but for now…

So this week the haphazard’s wanted to bring something a little heavier than usual. I must say we are suckers for the grimy bass lines, and live, this cat puts on one fantastic show: Boys Noize, out of Berlin, Germany. Not only a banging record label but also an amazing DJ/ producer coming through constantly with hit after hit. With phenomenal remixes of Cut Copy, Fiest, and the Kaiser Chiefs, you can always rely on Boys Noize to create a proper club banger with his remixes and original tracks. This song we don’t think got proper recognition. It is straight and to the point with it’s heavy drums and sick bassline.

Volta: A lunar crater on the moon, also a dramatic shift point in a poem in literary terms, Bjork also titled an album of hers with the very same name. So it’s no surprise a word carrying so much significance can easily be overlooked, I mean, who actually remembers anything these days anyways, what with the digital world at most of our fingertips? Lazy simians! Y’all must have a volta carved into your brains, enough with the mindless drug use kiddies! WAKE DA FUGG UP! This track by Boys Noize is SICK! Minimal and bangin, reminds me of this horrible tranny TY had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting last night in Bushwick out in Brooklyn at this loft party. OH MAN, YIKES! Big up-do head dress, collagen lips that looked as uneven as my scar from a busted-lip-skating-accident…times 888, triple-G boob job, plastic hip implants, and the worst face lift to add to the Jackson Pollock of a mug. Walking into the room he felt like Volta 82 should have been playing, this haunting monstrosity wanders in and trashes the party. Hits the fridge, nothing. Grabs some left overs of scattered bottles, concocting a sludge of alcohol, then proceeds to meander about and bother people. “DON’T be rude! No, no, no.” as s/him playfully slaps the hands of others. Being rude by telling others not to be rude…out of no where! This mess terrorizes folks and my tired couch-riddled ass. “Get up, dance with me,” the beast invites him, he’s locked in observation and bewilderment at that thing they mistook for a face they put on that morning. The haunting horns come in, the high hats build, spaceship noises gather and the beat drops…is that a smile or a frown? TY kindly declines as he’s pretty wasted and tired. “You gonna say NO to me?” TY replies with a smile and a “Yes.” That confused the monster for a bit and he was able to divert my attention to a friend. Disaster diverted. Don’t divert your ears from this track though!

Say what you will about the O.C. based DJ Dan Sena, but one thing you can’t deny is his growth of popularity in just one year’s time. Yes, it helps having friends who own one of the largest names / record labels in the scene today but having well connected friends will only get you so far. Dan Sena, has been DJing for just under two years and he has already toured some of the hottest spots in L.A. and SF. Lucky for us we got to know who he was almost a year ago and ever since then Dan has been a big supporter in the fakeRICH movement. And in turn we have been following his DJ career from his first installment of BusyWork to his packed house performance of Just Too Hott at the Glass House in Pomona.

We got a chance to pick his brain for five minutes over the waves of AIM to talk about his past, present and future.. .Check it out below:

First and foremost… Where are you / what are you doing?

Well I am in my studio, I was working on Sonny’s remix of Copaface, which comes out in January on Sony. Atlantic. Right now I’m working on a Haus Of Cards Remix for Weird Science. Aoki gave his stamp of approval on it. He’s into it.

What got Dan Sena into Djing?

Steve Aoki pushing me. Ha no joke

Did you know Steve from your band days?

Yup, we started Dim Mak together so to speak. I had a recording I wanted to put out and Steve wanted to start a label to put out his friends bands.

How long ago was that?

1996

Hah oh yes the days of grunge

Well, I think it was the resurgence of the boy band era to be exact

So in 1996 was is still cool to throw in a boy band track in the mix… or was that DJ suicide?

I have no idea. I was playing hardcore back then. I wasn’t even connected with DJ scene… Neither was Steve

Top 5 favorite bands in 1996?

Um…sunny day real estate, Threadbare, Dinosaur Jr., Converge and?
Hmm…man…that’s a tough one…Into another

Top 5 favorite bands today?

The Presets, Bag Raiders, Deadmau5, (although they arent considered bands)

Okay 2 more?

Nope.

Perfect

Hahaha

Other than Steve literally pushing you to DJ… when did you know it was something you actually wanted to pursue?

I didn’t really; he had been suggesting it to me while I was touring with my old band bullet train to Vegas. We spent 2004-2006 pretty much on the road.
He suggested it would be a good way to make money while I was home,
I was reluctant at first, but the more I thought about it, I figured what the hell…
The context of playing music in that setting as opposed to playing it as a band was pretty alien. It was a mentally a hurdle to get over, but I gave it a shot and found it to be really fun

When and where was your first DJ gig?

Ha uh it was with GMO at a Paul Frank dodge-ball competition in April of 2007 I think it was a mess but totally fun

Do girls prefer a dude in a band or a DJ?

DJ… I still don’t get it, but girls are a lot more interested in me now than ever. Compared to when I was in a band

So you have been seriously Djing now for a year and a half… Why didn’t you come up with some “witty” DJ name that everyone seems to have these days?

Eh I had gotten so much press with my old band under my name. A lot of people already knew who I was anyway. same thing with Steve.
I just didn’t think it was really necessary it’s short and sweet as it is

Lately it seems that most of your attention has been on the production side of things… where do you see your music taking you in the future? … /what is the goal for “DAN SENA”?

To be a giant…. Except I don’t see myself turning green… But in all honesty, I’m going to take things as they develop naturally. Being signed on a label was great and all but there was so much pressure. I’ve already been through the music machine once before. It’s not very forgiving no matter how hard you work.
But I do see myself writing an electro album next year. I want to get my production ear a little more dialed in before I take that on.

Oh wow… any special guests planned for the album?

Who knows? That would shred.
Sonny would be a good one. We’ve been really getting into the whole music thing. He’s young so I’ve been introducing him to a lot of stuff.
Love to get a chance to do something with Lykke Li…. and my homie Bjorn of course

Sonny who?

Sonny Moore (From First to Last / Sonnymoore.org)…. The kid I just did a remix for

How did you guys meet?

I met him at the Blow Up LA I did in September. He was just hanging out and we were there early and just started talking

How did that event go for you?

It was great. Really good crowd response. I gave Sonny a copy of my EP that night. He called me the next day. Funny thing was I didn’t get the message until 2 weeks later. It never showed up as a message on my phone haha

Can you send us the remix for this interview?

Nope…. It’s in the hands of his management and Sony/Atlantic, I’d love to though, you know me.

Last question (I ask everyone this) the 5 artists in the world you would love to perform with and where?

MIA in London
The Stone Roses reunion in Manchester (If that happened)
Deadmau5 in Costa Rica
Mixhell in Brazil
And uh …Soulwax in Belgium or where ever they’re the biggest
Haha

So not all of them all at once?

Yeah we could do that all at Coachella of course

Which track would you like for me to put on this interview?

Yr impossible(club retouch)

Anything you want to say / add in regards to the track?

It’s a reworking of yr impossible. It wasn’t so off the mark so it retained its title
Ok rad…I’ll use the “Chat with Dan Sena” as a reference point for the convo.

Ill put that up
Thanks man

No problem champ
You’re a champ
————————————————————–
