I remember two years ago when his brother Cottrell told me about him and asked if we could book him to open for our 80s v 90s party with FATLIP. I said yes without really knowing much about MC Imprint because Cottrell’s fam is my fam. I had no idea that Imprint was gonna blow my mind 2 years later at a live show in Long Beach and that’s exactly what happened last week.

 

Joe G. and I showed up at The Shore Ultra lounge in LB for Imprint’s album release party last week not really expecting to see a packed house by 10pm. And as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by Cottrell and his big bro Brett, and it looked like they had a little crew of groupies surrounding them. We knew this night was gonna be something special. Imprint absolutely killed it on the mic, David William Embree aka THE OPTIMIST aka the Birthday Boy destroyed it with LIVE beats all night (yes he was actually using a drum machine) and Marlon Fuentes kept the turntables hot with his DJ skills. …… Major thanks to STUDY footwear for sponsoring giveaways all night!  If you haven’t already got the album, go do it NOW!!

N.E.R.D. AND DAFT PUNK – HYPNOTIZE YOU (NERO REMIX)

Granted, some of you may call me a bandwagon fan or newb or whatever, but at least I can admit that as soon as I heard my first Murder City Devils song only a year ago I was hooked. After months of scouring the web, finding talks of secret shows here and there that never really happened. I was blown out of the water when I actually read on their myspace (yes I still go on myspace sometimes) that they were actually announcing tour dates and the reunion was going to happen! From then on I did all the research I could, downloading every song I could (yes I actually BOUGHT some albums too “In Name and Blood” and “Thelema”) just to prepare myself for their next show.

I arrived in Pomona with my partner in crime and the person who actually played me my first MCD song, with a bottle of whiskey and cameras in our hands in hopes of trying to capture what we knew was going to be nothing short of radness. As soon as we walked in, we met up with a few friends, held back our giddy screams, and grabbed an empty spot on the floor to prepare ourselves for a show we have been waiting over a year for.

They opened their set with “Bear Away” and although the vocals were a little low for the first half of their set, the show was a solid 90 minutes of rock and roll. Take your first blowjob, the first time you tried coke, and the first time you fired a gun combine them, and make them all last 90s minutes. Then you will have something that feels what it’s like to be at a Murder City Devils show. OK Ok Ok maybe I went a little overboard with that one so, Ill save the horrible metaphors and ostentatious adjectives for another post, andjust let the footage speak for itself.

 

As a bonus, I got their opening song “Bear Away” on film.

What we did get, was a little glimpse of what went down during the MUSIC LOVES FASHION party at the Riviera hotel. My friend / most awesome room mate Travis, handled the photo taking duties for the weekend and he did a good job leaving all the Persians out. Trust me, once you’ve seen ONE persian dude with his shirt off pumping his fist in the air yelling out “TIESTOOOOOOOO” at the top of his lungs, you’ve seen them all.

I’m not going to go through all the photos and comment on them like I normally do only because I really have no clue what’s going on in some of them. But I can tell you that on the very last photo, someone is literally in the process of getting pregnant in the pool.

 

At this point I’m just too tired of fighting it so here is some TIESTO magic to give you a glimpse of what 3 days in a desert hotel filled with 15,000 persians sounded like.

That night at Detroit bar was one of those nights that will live in my mind for a very long time. There were countless hilarious moments and everyone who performed did an amazing job. Mc Imprint brought some amazing rhymes to the stage and even though Fatlip’s laptop was broke, he still managed to put on a really dope set. All in all the night was a good time for everyone who came out and supported.

The best part about that night is that it was Erik (ROCKBERRY’s) birthday so after we all lost our minds at Detroit bar, we headed over to Jeren’s studio to keep it moving with an after hours party. Usually I am not a fan of afterhours parties at all…but since Fatlip’s train didn’t come in until 5am we had to make the most of it.

DEAD KENNEDY’S – TOO DRUNK TO FUCK

As soon as we arrived at Siren Studios for the Kia Soul Collective event, they were already at capacity and the line around the building was at least 3 blocks long. (Sorry I dont have a photo) once we got up to the front of the line we noticed they were letting very few people in but we knew might have a chance. We hung outside for about an hour and FINALLY got let in, JUST in time to grab a drink and get ready for Crystal Castles to shred!

Once the lights dimmed and they came on stage the crowd completely lost their minds. Alice dove straight into the crowd as soon as the first note for the first song dropped and that’s where she stayed for the majority of the show. The performance reminded me of old punk shows I used to go to at OLD WORLD in huntington beach. Energy, booze, and raging!  Kids were losing their minds, people were climbing on top of each other just to touch Alice as she tried her best to sing in a room that felt like it was a sauna.

Crystal Castles performed 7 songs and with each song the temperature inside the little studio rose another 10 degrees and the beer fueled crowd kept raging. I can honestly say I have never been that hot at any show I’ve ever been to, but hey, if you had the chance to see Crystal Castles for free would you want to see them in any other setting?

After we lost our minds and about 10 lbs of water (from sweating) we cruised downtown LA and made it into Redwood bar and LA CITA.Redwood bar had some really rad surfer rock / rockabilly bands playing and La Cita was bringin back old 90s house. All in all it was an amazing night. Major thanks to Kia Soul Collective / MFG / REBECCA (CORNERSTONE PROMOTION) for making the night all happen.

 

Later this week DIPLO and the Silversun Pickups will be performing at the same location so I suggest you arrive very early if you expect to get in.

Banana Split was ridiculously packed .. and I really wasn’t in the mood to take “party photos” so the ever so creepy Cancun Joey took over the reigns as photographer for the night. As you can see from the photos, I was a little busy doing work, the endless amounts of shots that Hyphy Crunk kept sending my way kept me very busy. Thanks Mark!

Anyways enough of ramblings.. the night was really fun, it was really good seeing EVERYONE in one place and the DJ sets by A-trak, Z-Trip, Thee Mike B, Fashen, and Steve Aoki were all amazing.

Thanks for all the good times Banana Split, over the past 3 years everyone in fakeRICH must have spent at least $10,000 at the bar so I guess you could say you owed us a good time. Although I was very sad that EVERYONE in fakeRICH couldn’t make it out to the last one I still had an amazing night hanging with new friends and catching up with old ones. I think I speak for everyone when I say that this, thank you for the good music, memories and most of all good times. !!!

The night featured amazing performances by: TOTALLY MICHAEL , FLOSSTRADAMUS, and of course KID SISTER… Dan Sena also pumped out the hits to close out the night.

Kid Sister and Flosstradamus not only performed one of the raddest sets I have ever seen they also turned out to be some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. After the show Kurt, Josh, and Melissa all stayed until around 2:30 signing autographs and chatting it up with anyone who wanted to stay.

Really I can’t go on enough about how amazing they were, seriously its nights like last Friday that make me stoked about the site and doing what we do.

HYPHY CRUNK -  KING OF ROCK

It seems that the more people we talk to about music, the more we find out that they are all getting tired of “Electro.” Don’t get us wrong we still love that genre, I mean you could say it has provided the soundtrack for our careers in this industry for the past 3 years but sometimes it’s good to switch it up.. and that’s exactly what the 80’s vs. 90’s night is all about.

 

We had one of our biggest turn out’s ever at Detroit bar that night and we can’t wait to do it again… look for more info coming soon.
